Hemlock woolly adelgid is moving north: act now

Hemlock woolly adelgid has already killed millions of hemlocks across the eastern United States, and it is now knocking on southern Vermont's door - which means woodland owners in Newfane, Townshend, Jamaica, and throughout Windham County need a plan before the pest arrives in force.
This is not a distant threat to track from a safe distance. Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is one of the most ecologically important trees in southern Vermont's forests. It shades cold headwater streams that trout depend on, provides dense winter cover for deer and wild turkey, and holds steep, rocky slopes that would otherwise erode badly. When hemlock goes, the character of a woodlot changes fundamentally - and the change is fast. Per the U.S. Forest Service's documented research on hemlock woolly adelgid, infested trees can die within four to ten years of initial infestation, sometimes much faster on stressed or drought-weakened trees. What hemlock woolly adelgid actually is
Hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae, abbreviated HWA) is a tiny, aphid-like insect native to Asia. North American hemlocks evolved with no meaningful resistance to it. The pest feeds by inserting a stylet - essentially a needle-like mouthpart - into the base of hemlock needles and drawing out stored starches. It does this across two generations per year. The tell-tale sign landowners can spot without any equipment is small white woolly masses clustered at the base of needles on the undersides of twigs, present year-round but easiest to see from October through June when the insects are actively reproducing.
The "woolly" part is the egg sac. Each egg mass, roughly the size of a sesame seed, can contain a large number of eggs. A single branch can host dozens of masses. Once you see them on a tree, the infestation is already well established. That is why early detection - ideally before you see them on your own land - matters enormously.
HWA spreads in several ways: wind carries crawlers (newly hatched juveniles), birds move them between stands, and deer carry them on their fur. You do not need special equipment for an initial survey. Here is a simple protocol:
- Pick at least five hemlocks per stand, choosing trees at the edges and interior
- Pull a lower branch toward you and flip it over so you can see the undersides of the twigs
- Look at the base of each needle where it attaches to the twig - this is where egg sacs form
- The masses are white, cottony, and roughly spherical, about 1 to 2 mm across
- Also look for yellowing or graying needles, thin crowns, or twig dieback, which indicate established, advancing infestation

Treatment options: what works and what the research says
There is no spray-the-whole-forest solution. Treatment decisions are made tree by tree and stand by stand, based on the value of individual trees, the severity of infestation, site conditions, and cost.
Systemic insecticides are the primary tool for high-value trees. Two active ingredients have the strongest evidence base:
- Imidacloprid - applied as a soil drench, trunk injection, or basal bark spray. Treatment timing matters: late winter through spring, when trees are beginning to move water and nutrients, tends to produce better uptake than midsummer applications.
Biological control is a longer-range strategy. Two predatory beetles - Laricobius nigrinus and Sasajiscymnus tsugae - are being released at infested sites across the eastern U.S. as part of an ongoing biocontrol program coordinated by the U.S. Forest Service and state partners. Results have been promising in some regions, though establishing self-sustaining predator populations takes years. Hemlock woolly adelgid is not a hypothetical risk for southern Vermont woodland owners - it is an active, advancing threat. The towns of Dummerston, Guilford, Brattleboro, and nearby areas in the Connecticut River valley have already seen confirmed infestations, and the pest is moving steadily northward and westward into interior Windham County.
