Beech bark disease has already arrived - now what?
If you walk your woodlot in Newfane, Townshend, Jamaica, or anywhere else in Windham County and notice beech trees with crusty, scaly bark, sunken cankers, or a yellowish-orange "tarry spot" oozing from the trunk, you are looking at beech bark disease (BBD). It is not coming. It is here, and it has been advancing through southern Vermont forests for decades. The question for woodland owners is not whether to worry about BBD - it is how to adjust your timber stand improvement (TSI) priorities so you protect the value and health of what remains.
This post walks through what BBD actually does to a stand, why it forces you to rethink the usual TSI playbook, and what you can do today on your own land whether you are enrolled in Vermont's Current Use program or managing your woodlot independently.
What beech bark disease actually does to a stand
Beech bark disease is not a single pathogen - it is a two-stage process. The introduced beech scale insect (Cryptococcus fagisuga) pierces beech bark in enormous numbers, leaving behind a woolly, waxy white coating. Those feeding wounds open the door for two Neonectria fungal species that infect the cambium underneath and cause the cankers that girdle and kill trees.
The disease is understood to have spread through much of the native range of American beech in the northeastern United States since its introduction in Nova Scotia in the 1890s. In Vermont, Windham County woodlots appear to show a wide spectrum of infection, from light early-stage presence to stands where many mature beech may already be cankered or dead.
The ecological consequence that matters most for TSI planning is what happens in the understory. Dying beech does not leave behind a clean gap ready for other species. Instead, beech has a powerful tendency to root-sprout prolifically. When the main stem dies or is harvested, the root system sends up dozens of small-diameter sprout clumps. These sprouts are generally just as susceptible to BBD as the parent tree, so the cycle repeats - but the sprout layer can be dense enough to suppress sugar maple, yellow birch, and white ash regeneration that you actually want.
Why standard TSI advice doesn't quite fit anymore
Classic TSI work focuses on releasing your best crop trees - usually high-quality sugar maple, yellow birch, or black cherry - by cutting or girdling competing stems. That logic still applies, but BBD adds a wrinkle on two fronts.
First, not all beech is the same. Some foresters describe certain beech trees as disease-resistant or smooth-barked, believed to carry traits that limit scale insect feeding. These trees are generally described as displaying smooth bark well into maturity, with little or no cankering, and capable of producing viable seed. In a BBD-affected stand, a smooth-barked beech of good form is a rare and genuinely valuable tree - both ecologically and, eventually, potentially economically. Cutting every beech in a TSI operation is a mistake that comes up again and again in owner conversations and professional forestry forums.
Second, the timing of beech removal matters enormously. Heavily cankered beech loses structural integrity fast. A tree that looks like it might hold on for another decade can fail in an ice storm or a wet snow event. Windham County is no stranger to late-season ice loading - towns like Marlboro and Halifax sit at elevations where that risk is real every few years. Snag and tip-up hazards from failing beech complicate future logging operations and can create liability questions. Rethinking your TSI priorities: a practical framework
Here is how the presence of BBD should shift your thinking when you walk your stand and start marking for TSI work.
1. Inventory your beech before you cut anything
Before any cutting, take stock of what you actually have. Walk the stand with a forester or on your own and make three rough categories:
- Heavily diseased beech - visible cankers covering more than roughly a third of the stem circumference, significant bark scaling, crown dieback. These trees are unlikely to survive another five to ten years.
- Lightly infected or early-stage beech - some scale presence or small cankers, but crown still mostly intact. These may have another decade of life but will almost certainly decline.
- Smooth-barked, apparently resistant beech - bark that looks genuinely smooth for a tree of its size, no cankers, healthy crown. These are candidates to retain.
This inventory changes which trees you target and which you protect.
2. Prioritize cankered beech for removal - but do it strategically
Heavily diseased beech that is competing with a good crop tree is the obvious first target. You get a dual benefit: you release the crop tree and you remove stems that are going to die, fall apart, and complicate future operations anyway. If the beech is merchantable - even as pulpwood or low-grade firewood - a small coordinated harvest or a TSI sale may capture some value before the tree deteriorates further.
Be aware, though, that beech with advanced BBD can be difficult to market. Buyers may discount or refuse heavily cankered material. Your consulting forester can tell you whether your volume is worth the effort of a sale or whether girdling is more efficient.
3. Retain and protect resistant beech
Mark smooth-barked beech as leave trees. Release them the same way you would release a high-quality sugar maple. The U.S. Forest Service's research on resistant beech suggests that these individuals contribute to the long-term genetic resilience of the beech population, and there is a real silvicultural argument that forests with a higher proportion of resistant trees will recover beech as a functional species over multiple generations. On a practical level, a straight, healthy beech of good form also has future timber potential once markets catch up with the idea of a disease-resilient beech resource.
4. Invest in the species that will replace beech in the canopy
The gap that dying beech creates - and the suppression that beech sprouts cause - makes the regeneration layer your most important long-term investment. In a healthy, productive Windham County hardwood stand, the species you want filling beech's former role are sugar maple, yellow birch, and sometimes red spruce at higher elevations (think Marlboro, Windham, or the upper drainages around Grafton). TSI work that removes beech sprout clumps and brush competing with those seedlings and saplings is genuinely high-value work, even though it produces no immediate merchantable wood.
Herbicide application to beech sprouts is one tool that professional foresters sometimes recommend to prevent re-sprouting after cutting. Herbicide use in Vermont forestry is generally regulated under state rules, and any application in or near streams requires particular care. Talk to a licensed forester before going that route.
5. Watch the deer browse situation
A complicating factor across Windham County is deer pressure on regeneration. High deer densities in towns like Brookline, Dummerston, and the Jamaica area can suppress exactly the sugar maple and yellow birch seedlings you are counting on to fill gaps left by dying beech. If you are investing in TSI work, it is worth also thinking about whether exclusion fencing or targeted hunting pressure is part of the picture. Current Use implications: does BBD-driven TSI work affect your plan?
If your land is enrolled in Vermont's Use Value Appraisal (Current Use) program and you have an approved forest management plan, BBD-related TSI work is generally consistent with good forestry practice - but there are details that matter.
Your plan almost certainly calls for specific timber harvests or TSI activities on a schedule. If BBD mortality is changing the composition of your stand faster than your plan anticipated, you may need a plan amendment. A significant mortality event - say, a large area of canopy beech dying and falling in a short period - could change your stocking, your species composition, and the silvicultural prescriptions that made sense when the plan was written. The short version: do not wait until your plan is obviously out of date. Talk to your forester as BBD progresses. A plan that reflects current stand conditions protects your enrollment status and your ability to make good decisions.
Also worth noting: if BBD mortality and salvage harvesting create gaps large enough to qualify as a significant land use change, there are tax implications to understand. The Vermont Land Use Change Tax is triggered by withdrawal from Current Use, not by forestry activity within an enrolled parcel - but it is worth knowing how that backstop works before you make major decisions.
What to do if you're not yet enrolled in Current Use

A note on realistic expectations
Beech bark disease is not going away. The science is clear on that point. The Forest Service and university extension researchers in Vermont and New Hampshire have studied BBD for decades, and while there is real hope in the biology of resistant trees, there is no treatment that will restore your heavily infected beech to health. What you can do is manage around it deliberately - protect the resistant individuals, clear the path for your best remaining hardwoods, and build a stand that will be more resilient and more valuable in twenty years than it would be if you did nothing.
